What is the difference between a Poodle and a Maltipoo?
A Maltipoo is a Maltese crossed with a Toy Poodle, so it keeps the Poodle's small size, low shedding and clever mind, then softens it. The purebred Toy Poodle is the athletic scholar: the sharpest trainer in the small-dog class, more independent, with a tighter, curlier coat. The Maltipoo is clingier, wavier-coated and a touch less predictable. Both are HDB-approved.
Same size, near-identical looks
On size and coat the Toy Poodle and the Maltipoo are near twins. Both are small toy dogs of roughly 2 to 4kg, both are low-shedding, and apricot is the most common colour in each. Line up an apricot Toy Poodle against an apricot Maltipoo and most people could not tell you which is which.

Where they part: character and predictability
Character is the real tie-breaker. The Toy Poodle is the athletic scholar of the pair: one of the sharpest small breeds there is, keen to train, and independent enough to entertain itself for stretches. The question we ask before recommending one is not who is home all day, but whether you can give this dog a job: training, tricks, puzzle toys, an engaged walk.
The Maltipoo keeps plenty of that Poodle brain, so it still learns fast, but the Maltese half softens it into more of a velcro companion. It would rather shadow you around the flat than problem-solve alone. Neither is better; they simply suit different homes and different owners.
The quieter difference is predictability. Two Poodle parents produce a litter that is consistent in size, coat and temperament, which is what purebred means in practice. A Maltipoo is a first cross, so each puppy is more of a surprise: it can lean more Maltese or more Poodle in both looks and character. Grooming, shedding and Singapore humidity
Low-shedding does not mean low-grooming, and this is the shared cost buyers underestimate for both breeds. A Poodle or a Maltipoo coat that is not brushed will felt into mats, and Singapore's humidity speeds that up. Both need a salon visit roughly every 4 to 6 weeks, priced by weight, plus regular brushing in between.
The Poodle's tighter curl mats faster than the Maltipoo's looser wave, so the Poodle is marginally the higher-maintenance coat of the two. Choose the Toy Poodle if you want the more trainable, more independent dog and you will actually give it a job. It rewards an owner who enjoys training as a hobby and can fill its day with a walk, some enrichment and a bit of work. Choose the Maltipoo if you want a gentler lap companion that leans into you and suits a home where someone is usually around.

Do Poodles and Maltipoos look different?
